I'm excited to have received a card from Australia. I studied in Australia while in college -- in North Ryde, just outside of Sydney. I love Australia! It sparked my passion for international travel.
This card is from Warrnambool, which was founded in 1847 although it had operated as a whaling and sealing base prior to this time. Surrounded by rich volcanic soils the Warrnambool area grew grain and potatoes which could be shipped cheaply around the coast of Melbourne. Today with a population of nearly 30,000 people major industries include tourism, food processing and textiles. The sender of the card stated that in the winter time Southern Right whales visit the area from Antarctica and swim close to the shore.
Thanks janetmac7 for the card (AU-124252).
